New Jinjiang Hotel
The Jinjiang Tower—not to be confused with the historic Jin Jiang Hotel—provides solid service in a prime location, just north of the ritziest stretch of Huaihai Zhong Lu (Middle Huaihai Road) and the French Concession, and within easy reach of Nanjing Xi Lu(West Nanjing Road) to the north. The Bund and People’s Park are easily reached by taxi or metro, though travelers with business in Pudong might find the commute slightly inconvenient.
Opened in 1988 as Shanghai’s first Chinese-managed five-star hotel, today’s building is showing its age, but given the location and the excellent views from the 48-story tower’s upper floors, it remains a good bet for tourists and business travelers alike. Even if you’re not staying there, a trip to the top of the Jinjiang via glass elevator is a fun way to gain a bird’s eye view of Shanghai. If you’re hungry, you can stick around and dine at the Blue Heaven Revolving Restaurant. The food itself isn’t anything to write home about, but watching the mad jumble of Shanghai’s skyline slip by while dining is a pleasure worth experiencing once.
